Governor Mark Sanford’s ethics inquiry is apparently not going as smoothly as the tormented GOP governor had hoped. State Senator David Thomas, a fellow Republican in South Carolina, opened up a new inquiry into the financial shenanigan’s of the South Carolina governor, who is alleged to have visited his mistress abroad on our tax dollars. Cheating Politicians This is an open talk thread where you can talk about what you like, but I’m talking about cheating politicians and the sex.

So, now, facing the serious question of health care reform, we’re back to the silliness of the campaign trail. We have Sarah Palin claiming, on her Facebook page, that President Obama is going to set up “death panels,” a claim that merited a “pants on fire” rating on PolitiFact.com’s Truth-O-Meter: The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care.

It was once thought to be the devil’s hand, but today lefthanders are uniting to show the rest of the population what makes them special. Today is International Lefthanders Day, and righthanders worldwide are being encouraged to go leftie so they can get an idea of just how many products are designed without much thought for the remaining 15 per cent of the population. Scissors, shovels, fridges, golf clubs, mouses for computers, and doors all favour right-handers.

If only we could talk Arianna Huffington into giving us $175 million. We have a feeling that IHateTheMedia.com could become the world’s most popular website if we were simply able to redistribute that wealth to our readers. The New York Daily News reports on free money mania in New York: A $200 back-to-school giveaway for needy kids sparked a mad rush for money on the streets of New York on Tuesday.
“It’s free money!” said Alecia Rumph, 26, who waited in a Morris Park, Bronx, line 300 people deep for the cash to buy uniforms and book bags for her two kids.

This is the deficit — outgo over income. The July deficit reflected government outlays of $332.2 billion, a record number for any month, up from $263 billion of July 2008. Government receipts totaled $151.5 billion, so there is a bit of a gap. Quite a credit-card debt for us to pay off. When Barack Obama came into office, the

WASHINGTON: Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday left open the possibility of sending more US troops to Afghanistan but warned of stretched military resources and the risk of a possible backlash. Gates said he and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, had told the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, that “we want him to ask for what he thinks he needs.” “And I think you have to allow your commanders that freedom,” he told a news conference.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faces daunting challenges as he begins his second term By Jon Leyne BBC Tehran correspondent After the turmoil of the last two months, it was a moment when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could attempt to restore his dignity. This time the drama was neatly choreographed as the oath was administered. The hugs, handshakes and kisses all in proper order, unlike the awkward moment on Monday when he was officially endorsed by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

A Low-Level Investigation By Joanne Mariner, Counterpunch, Aug 13, 2009 Attorney General Eric Holder appears to be on the verge of appointing a federal prosecutor to investigate Bush-era interrogation abuses. Citing current and former US officials, the Los Angeles Times said Holder was planning an inquiry that would be narrow in scope. The investigation, which would focus solely on CIA crimes, would examine “whether people went beyond the techniques that were authorized” in memos issued by Bush administration lawyers.
