The Independent An Afghan law which legalised rae has been sent back to parliament with a clause letting husbands starve their wives if they refuse to have sex. President Hamid Karzai ordered a review of the legislation after The Independent revealed that it negated the need for consent within marriage. President Barack Obama described it as “abhorrent”, Gordon Brown said Britain would “not tolerate” it, and other Nato countries threatened to withdraw their troops unless the legislation was drastically re-written.

We have been witnessing over the past couple of months a back and forth between Democrats and some Republicans in Congress who want to know what the CIA has been hiding from them and the administration and most Republicans who want to keep the CIA’s activities secret. The President seems to want to keep the prerogatives of the Executive without oversight as the Bush Administration preferred. They seem to have become enamoured with the Dark Side as Cheney out it back in in the days just after 9-11 when many in the country felt that the sky was literally falling on our heads.
