WASHINGTON: The US Senate is poised to a send a defence bill to President Barack Obama late on Thursday, which includes tough new conditions on American military aid to Pakistan. The president is likely to sign the fiscal 2010 defence authorisation bill despite objections to its funding for a controversial backup jet fighter engine. ‘We do not expect the bill to be vetoed,’ said Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin.

There’s no love lost between New York Governor Paterson and President Obama these days. Obama’s pay czar’s decision to slash the pay of Wall Street execs didn’t help matters. Paterson estimates the revenue hit for New York at about a billion bucks . Washington  – US lawmakers have begun considering another round of spending measures to shore up the economy as the country continues on a painstaking journey from recession to recovery. You might call it a second stimulus, but it is more like a rash of much smaller initiatives. Time magazine dubbed it a “stealth stimulus” this week, and the term has stuck.Lawmakers are debating an extension of unemployment benefits beyond the end of 2009 and prolonging a tax credit for new home buyers that is set to expire on November 30.A variety of other measures have also been proposed, mostly by left-leaning Democrats.
