Here’s yet another reason why government should not be involved in funding the arts. According to Rocco Landesman, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, President Obama is “the most powerful writer since Julius Caesar.” Is Caesar the best example Landesman could come up with? Caesar, as students of history know, was a tyrant who brought radical change to Rome, converting it from a republic to a dictatorship. NRO also takes Landesman to task for his ahistoric observation .

PORTLAND, Maine – A supporter and an opponent of same-sex marriage made their respective cases on live television Wednesday, less than a week before a statewide referendum on whether to allow gay marriage in Maine. The referendum is about equality under the law, Mary Bonauto of Protect Maine Equality said in a debate before an audience of nearly 370 people at the University of Southern Maine. “We have people who want to make a legal commitment, take on responsibilities, who want to be a family,” Bonauto said.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Trumpeting a victory against careless spending, President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed a defense bill that kills some costly weapons projects and expands war spending. In a major civil rights change, the law also makes it a federal hate crime to assault people based on sexual orientation. The $680 billion policy bill doesn’t provide any actual dollars, but rather sets guidance that is typically followed by congressional committees that decide appropriations.
