When Barack Obama asserted that the Democratic health plan did not include coverage of illegal aliens, a South Carolina Republican representative — who unlike Obama has probably read the legislation — stood up and shouted “You lie!” So for a moment the authentic voice of the people broke into the august proceedings. And how did the putative leader of the opposition react, afterwards? Wilson’s behavior was “totally disrespectful,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who had been Obama’s rival in the 2008 presidential election, said on CNN.

SOUTH CAROLINA – Desperately trying to distance itself from the outlandish behavior of its Republican politicians, the State Tourism Board has announced an aggressive new campaign to encourage tourism. “It was time to take the focus of the Republicans and on the state,” said Tourism Board Chairman Tim Tapper. “And we’re willing to go to any lengths to do that.” South Carolina’s tourism has taken a nose dive in the past few months, most notably for the adulterous and bizarre behavior of Governor Mark Sanford.

It was the Obama so many have been waiting for in this debate, one that has been more food fight than discourse during the dog days of August. “Instead of honest debate,” the president said, “we have seen scare tactics … and out of this blizzard of charges and countercharges, confusion has reigned.
