This morning, on the anniverary of 9/11, I turned on the tv as I prepared to leave for work — and found myself watching a re-broadcast of the TODAY Show episode that I’d watched on that harrowing day 8 years ago.  I was standing in the same spot.  I had even tuned in at about the same time.  It was the worst kind of deja vu. Such moments make you reflective. I won’t use this post to memorialize the day. Others with more talent who were more personally touched by that event will do better.  I did, however, want to share the happy side benefit of my reflective morning.

US President Barack Obama has made one of the most important speeches of his presidency, as he faced Congress over his plans for healthcare reform. Mr Obama said that failure to introduce reform had led the country to breaking point and it was now time to act. He said he planned to improve health insurance for those who have it and to create an insurance exchange to extend cover to those who do not. Republicans said Mr Obama’s plans would make healthcare much more expensive.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. You won’t click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.  Belo discurso de Barack Obama, que levou a uma polémica ridícula . Nenhum país é perfeito.

The day after President Obama’s impassioned speech for big-government health care, Wall Street bet heavily that the so-called government-insurance option he supports is dead. In a strong stock market on Thursday — the market’s fifth-straight daily rise (so much for the September swoon) — health-insurer shares advanced significantly. Cigna increased 5 percent; Health Net almost 5 percent; Humana 3.5 percent; and UnitedHealth Group 1.5 percent.

The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a training exercise on the Potomac River this morning, although reports that shots were fired are false, said Lt. Commander Tony Russell. The incident grabbed attention because today is the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and President Barack Obama had earlier crossed the river to attend a [...] This story comes to us via Homeland Security – National Terror Alert. As the United States commemorates the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Coast Guard may have inadvertently caused a security scare. As President Barack Obama crossed the Memorial Bridge on the way back from a memorial service at the Pentagon, reports were heard on police scanners that the Coast Guard had fired 10 rounds of ammunition. Coast Guard just released a statement saying that reports of gunfire on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., may have been based on overheard radio calls made over a training frequency.

In February, Congress passed the Obama Administration’s “( Five Year ) National Broadband Plan ,” part of the so-called “Stimulus.” (As economist Russ Roberts put it , government “stimulus” is “like taking a bucket of water from the deep end of a pool and dumping it into the shallow end.”) The Plan transfers $7.2 billion from taxpayers to broadband providers in subsides to promote broadband build-out. More than 10,000 comments have been filed on the plan.
