New Name Floated In Geithner Replacement Talks Dealbreaker (What up, bankster? I said I wouldn’t be using that word but it’s in context and I had to say it. This will be the new Treasury lyrical theme – just replace the word gangsta with the other one.) America’s Next President? YouTube (In the same vein as the last link. Hat tip Andrew Sullivan) Galleon paid banks millions for ‘edge’ FT (Proof the system is rigged) How to avoid a repeat of the Great Crash FT Struggling in a recovering economy BBC Soros: General Theory of Reflexivity FT (Not much chatter on this yet.

The Root’s Dayo Olopade talks to social media researcher Danah Boyd about racial divisions between social networking sites. Apparently MySpace is seen as a “black” site and Facebook is a “white” site, then within any given site people tend to associate with people of their own race. The implication isnt’ so much that one site is better suited to a racial group than another, just that the choices reflect how people socialize in the real world: At the end of the day, their choice ultimately comes down to: Where are my friends?

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the ’sphere… The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble A SECOND PLACE at OTB’s Caption Contest. Been a while since I ’ve done anything with that, so It’s nice to see I still have the touch. NO KIDDING? Slobberin’ Barney Frank (D-MA) says Democrats are “trying on every front to increase the role of government.” (BBCT: Dave Hatter at Facebook) Gee, Barney, I ’d have never jolly well known that. Nice to see you admit it though.

Sullivan doubles down : This simply doesn’t make sense. Hate crime laws for most categories, including federal measures, have been around for a long time. The only new thing here – the only thing that has fostered “a decade of opposition and delay” – is the addition of sexual orientation. So the president had a chance to defend gays from being excluded from the usual roster of victims, in front of military leaders, and he had to walk backwards into this strange circumlocution.

People unhappy with their work can cause all sorts of trouble in the office, or whatever the job site is. They might grumble and pull others aside and say what’s being done is just nonsense, which makes everyone uncomfortable, especially those who have no particular views on whether the work is useful or not, and who need the paycheck – they mutter something like, well, we’re not curing cancer here, and scurry away. But the atmosphere is poisoned.

States may opt out of the public option health plan, but they cannot opt out of having to pay for it. The opt out states will still have to pay taxes toward the health plan. Do not be deceived by the Opt Out Plan. ~Pesky Emotional Republican~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~by Ann Coulter / Human Events / 10/28/2009 The Democrats’ all-new “opt out” idea for health care reform is the latest fig leaf for a total government takeover of the health care system.Democrats tell us they’ve been trying to nationalize health care for 65 years, but the first anyone heard of the “opt out” provision was about a week ago.

A couple of weeks ago I discussed The Free Market Case For The Public Option . Andrew Sullivan picks up this topic, citing Hayek: I keep coming back to Hayek on this – because government-sponsored health insurance is not government-run healthcare. Maybe it’s my British roots that make this so clear to me (if the British Tories proposed a universal health insurance scheme, with care provided by private doctors, nurses and hospitals, it would rightly be regarded as a major shift to the

Not much I agree with Andrew Sullivan on these days, but I agree with what he says here : If I were a GOP strategist, I’d obviously urge an independent-focused message based on skepticism of government mixed with a real practical agenda for change. I’d focus on the Congress, not Obama. [...] On social issues, the emerging pattern is clear: Americans are increasingly troubled by abortion on demand (although a plurality clearly favors legal abortion), they are increasingly hostile to gun control, and they are increasingly supportive of gay equality.

I like Steve Benen and used to read his blog, The Carpetbagger Report , regularly. I still occasionally read his posts at his current home, The Washington Monthly ’s Political Animal — but I have to seriously question this post from earlier today, bemoaning Democrats’ perceived inability (unwillingness?) to enforce “party loyalty.” An excerpt: Political parties that expect loyalty from caucus members tend to be more effective and have more success advancing their agenda.

Shorter Andrew Sullivan – “Fuck you, Barack Obama, for signing the hate crimes legislation. How dare you? Just words. Asshole.” And no, I am not kidding. I also love that the GOLD STANDARD for some bloggers is the speed with which POTUS has remarks up on the website. Remember a couple weeks ago when that idiot freaked out because the HRC speech was not up fast enough on a Saturday night, and that was perceived as a grievous insult and demonstrated Obama’s “true feelings” about

From Andrew Sullivan: My worry about the tea-partiers is not that just they are Johnny-Come-Latelies (even though most are). It is not that they are partisans (some of them clearly aren’t). It is that they are motivated by an amorphous distrust and loathing of of government that never seems to get translated into actual policies (and that is itself more populist than conservative). And they are pushing the GOP leadership to take talk-radio abstract positions, rather than tangible proposals.
