As Om Malik points out , turn-by-turn GPS navigation with voice guidance has come to Google Maps and carriers can’t be happy about it. Who is even less happy? TomTom and Garmin. According to Google, less than 1% of navigation devices are connected to the cloud and ironically my TomTom Go 740 Live with Google local integration is one of these devices and it is limited – it really only allows you to query Google for local establishments and it does receive real-time traffic data.

In an interview with GigaOM’s Om Malik, Lee Williams of the Symbian Foundation accused Google of using Android to collect user data for questionable purposes. Symbian is the mobile phone OS used in Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung smartphones. Despite having a relatively small presence in the US market, it is found on more smartphones worldwide than any other OS. Some industry analysts believe Android could be Symbian’s biggest competitor over the next few years.

Details are still incoming, but Google is launching their music search service today. I’m not yet sure how this will tie in with Android or if it will even work on our phones. When we have more information on all the features of Google Music and how it relates to Android, I will update this post. Om Malik has a write up on all the partners that are cooperating with Google on this new feature. When the site goes live, you can access it from http://www.google.com/music/

There’s a new Amazon acronym to learn. RDS stands for Relational Database Service and it is the newest addition to Amazon’s suite of web services. Unlike previous data services from Amazon such as SimpleDB , RDS is relational (our profiles for the SimpleDB API and new RDS API ). In fact, it’s a MySQL 5.1 instance but the main difference is that it is hosted on a virtual server instance in Amazon’s data center. And it can expand and contract as needed, programmatically.

Many of us who have been using notebook computers heavily for years have experienced the “Blue Screen of Death” at least once. The sinking feeling you get when you have been working away fine and then the notebook refuses to do one more thing. It simply dies. Normally when we think about the BSOD we have a Windows machine in mind, but our boss Om Malik discovered the hard way that MacBook Pros are subject to them, too. He had not one, not two — three new 15-inch MacBook Pros die over the past few days, and he’s understandably upset.

Click here to view the embedded video. My partner and I use Google Voice as a single number that rings all our phones (home, both mobile and both offices) so that if a friend is trying to find us, one number does it. Because it’s another number for friends to learn, it hasn’t caught on. Now we can port our existing mobile numbers over to Google Voice. It’s not a full port, Google says they’re still working on that. There are a few less features, but still an amazing service.

Filed under: Software , Symbian , Android Strap yourselves in, folks, we’re about to launch the Mudslinger 3000 again and figure out if any of it sticks. Lee Williams of Symbian starts off with a few attack volleys relating to Google’s “fragmentation” of UI elements, and the resultant closed APIs being a nightmare to code for. With so many divergent UI elements and styles, he argues, developers would suffer, and the consequence would be a less vibrant app ecosystem.

The Android news has been coming at us pretty fast lately. Even with the great team we have here at AndroidGuys, there are still going to be articles and items that slip through the cracks. For this very reason, we created a meta-post called “Around the Androidosphere” which aims to fill in the gaps. With that out of the way, it’s time for another quick round of “stuff-we-didn’t-get-to-but-still-worth-a-mention”.
