Dogster , Catster and Snuzzy – that focused on maximizing revenues early on instead of aiming for user growth for the sake of user growth. While many other Web 2.0 names are struggling to raise more money to stay in business, Dogster has been profitable since the second quarter of 2007 and is solidly in control of its own destiny. (Full disclosure: Michael Arrington was a very early angel investor. His statement about his investments is here .) Not only that—premium ad sales for the sites are up 20% this year.

Movement in the Right Direction, but a Way to Go Yet. As we have seen more positive signs in the US economy for the last 6 weeks or so, we’ve been consistently discussing that we must see meaningful decreases in unemployment, and a decline in the abundance of distressed properties before we will see real growth in the US housing market. The report today shows movement in the right direction about unemployment, but there is a long road ahead of us yet.

This is a guest post from Mr Credit Card. Today, he is going to write a guest post about ROI on credit cards (which I guess fits the theme of my blog). Credit cards are like knives. You can hurt yourself with them, or they can be great tools. Today, I’m going to talk about how to increase your “ROI” on your credit card use. But first, let’s talk the how your credit card ROI is correlated with how you use your card. Negative ROI – If you carry a balance on your credit card, then your use of credit card is a negative ROI.

EFF Supports New Bill to Repeal Telco Immunity : Via EFF.org Updates . Yesterday, four US Senators led by Senator Chris Dodd announced plans to introduce “The Retroactive Immunity Repeal Act”. That bill, endorsed by EFF, would repeal the law that Congress passed last summer granting immunity to phone companies that illegally assist in domestic spying by US intelligence agencies, and would revive EFF’s recently dismissed lawsuit against AT&T for its collaboration in the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping program.

Breaking Vanish: A Story of Security Research in Action : Via Freedom to Tinker . Today, seven colleagues and I released a new paper, ” Defeating Vanish with Low-Cost Sybil Attacks Against Large DHTs “. The paper’s authors are Scott Wolchok (Michigan), Owen Hofmann (Texas), Nadia Heninger (Princeton), me, Alex Halderman (Michigan), Christopher Rossbach (Texas), Brent Waters (Texas), and Emmett Witchel (Texas). Our paper is the next chapter in an interesting story about the making, breaking, and possible fixing of security systems.
