Not every company has the design chops to make it in modern consumer electronics. Case in point: NEC’s Aterm WM3300R. While it looks like a thermostat you’d wall-mount at the local health center, it packs enough technological appeal to make up for that clinical dowdiness. See, it’s a pocketable WiMAX router with integrated 802.11b/g WiFi — think MiFi only with the relatively blazing speeds of 40Mbps (downstream) / 10Mbps (upstream) WiMAX instead of EV-DO or HSPA and a battery capable of about 2.5 hours of shared usage.

Pentax’s K-x has been shipping in various corners of the globe (in various hues ) for a hot minute now, but at long last the entry-level DSLR has found itself on the test bench. The good folks over at Tech Radar were able to take the $650 shooter for a spin, and with few exceptions, they absolutely adored it. Image quality was deemed fantastic, and without qualification, that’s easily the most important aspect of a camera.

At this stage of its development, PETMAN is here to assist mankind. However, it’s clearly fated to be weaponized as an AT-ST walker in support of Imperial ground forces. For the time being anyway, this biped humanoid is being built by Boston Dynamics to test military suits used to protect soldiers in chemical warfare. As an evolutionary advance from its four-legged BigDog platform, PETMAN does the ol’ heel-toe at a healthy 3.2 MPH (5.14 KPH) and packs enough balancing intelligence to remain upright even when given a shove from the side.

You read that headline correctly, Google Voice now works with your existing mobile phone number — no need to choose a new Google number that must be communicated to friends, family, and co-workers. This “lighter” version of Google Voice then lets you hand-over voicemail responsibility (and your data) to Google’s authority where you can listen to (or read via automatic voice to text conversion) your voicemail on a computer (in any order you like), read them as text messages on your phone, and choose personalized greetings by caller.

That Northwest Flight 188 San Diego to Minneapolis that went 150 miles off course? Well, it wasn’t because of alcohol or sleeping. No, the cause here was the pilots using their personal laptops while talking about “airline crew flight scheduling procedure.” As far as we can tell there was no in-flight WiFi , and it’s a good thing, too — no telling how far of they’d have been if the pilots had access to World of Warcraft.
