I’ve been thinking a lot over the last couple of months about news. In fact somewhere within me is brewing a book on the way that the Internet and technology has changed news so when the Digital Production BuZZ asked me to comment on the subject this week, it forced me to put some of the thoughts into a coherent form. Hopefully last night’s interview (my segment starts 20 minutes in) was, but I’d like to share those thoughts with you here. I think most people are aware that the newspaper industry, in particular, is in trouble.

Continuing our slog through the end of August, I have just published a book review of The Silence and the Scorpion by Brian Nelson over on Huffington Post , which makes a pretty good case that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez should be standing trial for having ordered his militias to fire upon unarmed crowds of protesters in the April 11th, 2002 events.

Clip from latest Huffington Post blog by Max Britain is completely on the wrong side of this issue. Copyrights are the public’s rights to help manage the public’s intellectual property. A limited period of time, like 28 years (per the original Constitutional statute), giving individuals monopoly rights over intellectual property is the outer most boundary of time that a society invested in the speech rights and intellectual rights of its people would allow in good conscience.

Despite Congress’ current recess, the health care debate is still making headlines. I can’t read the NY Times, CNN, or the Huffington Post without seeing a new piece of information or perspective on the discussion. The Wall Street Journal ran a piece yesterday that appeared to be little more than a platform for Iowa Senator Charles Grassley’s opposition to the potential government run health care option. Grassley “used the Canadian health-care system as a foil, decrying what he said were long wait times.
