President Barack Obama has picked Dr. Regina Benjamin as the next surgeon general. Dr. Benjamin hails from the Deep South, rural Alabama to be exact. She made headlines in the wake of Hurricane Katrina with an unyielding determination to rebuild her nonprofit medical clinic. As you know, the surgeon general is the advocate of the people and the position can be a very powerful and effective one with the right personality — like Dr. Benjamin.

A horrendous story of false accusations and Parental Alienation. From Kids recant abuse claims after dad jailed 20 years ( Huffington Post , 7/11/09): Former Vancouver police officer Clyde Ray Spencer spent nearly 20 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually molesting his son and daughter. Now, the children say it never happened. Matthew Spencer and Kathryn Tetz, who live in Sacramento, Calif., each took the stand Friday in Clark County Superior Court to clear their father’s name, The Columbian newspaper reported.

It isn’t pretty, if the results of the Young Republicans’ leadership election at their convention in Indianapolis yesterday are any indication. Here’s the Daily Beast’s John Avalon: The Young Republicans faced a stark choice at their convention in Indianapolis yesterday as they chose their next leader: a center-right twentysomething interested in greater outreach, or a self-described “true conservative” who is almost 40 and spent last week dealing with Daily Beast reports about her beliefs , which are, at best, often hateful, and at worst, downright racist .

Barack Obama was well received in his first visit as president of the United States to sub-Saharan Africa. In less than 24 hours, he met with Ghanaian dignitaries and traveled to a Cape Coast Castle, the location from which thousands or maybe millions of slaves were forcibly transported to the Americas. Overall, his speech in Accra, Ghana was poignant and congratulatory of Ghana’s democratic successes, using it as an example of the possibilities for other African governments.

The Washington Post allegedly let a contract columnist go because his Web traffic had plummeted in recent months. Dan Froomkin, who authored the White House Watch blog , was fired in late June. (He’s since been hired by The Huffington Post .) According to an article in the NY Times : “The paper’s ombudsman, Andrew Alexander, said in a blog post that ‘reduced traffic played a big role’ in the decision.
