By John Hertz: Some Worldcon notes while I work on my fuller report. The Fanzine Lounge by Day, hosted by Yvonne & Lloyd Penney in the Palais des congrès , was a success. Given adequate if not ample room just outside the Art Show, they laid out fanzines for sale and free, and conversation space, peopled by fanziners and askers. Issue 31 of WOOF (Worldcon Order Of Faneditors), the annually collated apa (amateur publishing ass’n) invented by Bruce Pelz, was duly assembled and distributed, with a superb Bard Foster cover; Alan Stewart will serve as Official Editor pro tempore next year at Aussiecon IV.

Britons Unite To Defend Their National Health Service By Nicole Belle – Crooks and Liars I guess the UK is sick of hearing we namby-pamby Yanks brag on our health care system and trash theirs, disregarding the fact that the UK pays significantly less per capita for health care and achieves far better outcomes. And they’ve decided to push back: Britons love to mock their National Health Service — just don’t let anyone else poke fun at it.

Whom Do We Trust?catholicexchange.com

For decades, Walter Cronkite was a towering figure in American life. And his passing has raised an important question. “Whom can we trust now?” The Washington Post asked that question last month after the death of Walter Cronkite, once known as the most trusted man in America. For many years, the CBS news anchor was a soothing, familiar presence in living rooms across America, and as the Post says, “He could have talked us into almost anything, if he wanted to.” Well, he and I sparred off over what I saw as biased reporting.

How the Battle of ObamaCare Was Wonsultanknish.blogspot.com

With Obama’s allies sounding the retreat on the public option, ObamaCare has taken a decisive blow. And Obama has taken his first major political defeat. What is particularly extraordinary is that he has suffered this defeat, despite interrupted media sycophancy delivering programming that reflected every single White House talking point. From smearing Republicans as in the pockets of the insurance industry and Town Hall protesters as extremist racists, to treating ObamaCare as the only reasonable thing that only lunatics would resist– the media delivered on its end of the propaganda.

Glenn Beck makes me laugh. Not because he’s got a stand-up routine that he does when not holding forth on Fox News. Nor am I referring to his on-air shenanigans from when he was a morning show DJ. No, Beck’s humor is more of the kind where you go, “dude, did he REALLY just say that? I mean, even the people who THINK that don’t actually SAY it.” I also draw no end of amusement from his ridiculous conspiracy theories. On a recent trip to Utah, I was was watching TV with my brother.

Jackson wears a golden sombrero in loss – riveraveblues.com 08/17/2009 Via Lane Meyer , 14th rounder Graham Stoneburner has apparently agreed to terms with the Yanks. I’m of the the belief that Stoneburner has the best pure arm among Yankee draftees, and might very well be the best prospect from this draft haul behind top pick Slade Heathcott. Speaking of Heathcott, there was a report this morning that he and 2nd rounder JR Murphy have apparently agreed to terms , but the deals won’t be official until physicals are complete.
