The article “ 5 Social Media Lessons Learned from Whole Foods ” on Mashable has a number of useful strategies for direct sales companies who are considering a social media strategy. What I find most interesting is the approach Whole Foods takes on both a corporate level, as well as how it empowers its local stores to participate. Some learnings that apply to direct sales companies: Individuals in the corporate office who use Twitter in their official capacity are empowered to use it however they are comfortable, within a few guidelines.

Twitter hasn’t given us much.  We got a new homepage annnnd that’s about it.  So it’s pretty interesting that they’ve recently been announcing a few new features on the way.  They’re no small endeavor either. Here are some additions that you can (officially) be expecting: 1. Official Retweets : Twitter has announced Phase 1 of their “Project Retweet”.  To this point “ retweets ” or the reposting of someone else’s tweet has been a feature created by users and has not been officially supported by Twitter.  Apparently, that’s going to change.  There are many implications of this project, so check out the article.

Facebook has introduced two minor changes to its interface today. They’ve changed the blue bar on top of the page; furthermore, they’ve slightly altered the way ad ratings work. Before, you had little thumbs up/down icons below every advertisement. Now, Facebook has simply added you the option to “like” the ad (below) or to turn it off via an “x” at the top right corner. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it does make the page a little less cluttered.

Earlier today, two screenshots of an ad from one of Microsoft’s sites began circling internet forums and blogs: one depicted a conference table with a couple of happy employees: an Asian man, a black man, and a white woman. The other image was from the Polish version of the same site, and it’s identical to the first one, except the head of the black man was replaced with a head of a white man. Initially I thought it was just someone having some fun in Photoshop trying to take a stab at Microsoft, but it’s real, and Microsoft has issued an apology .
