I have to admit I’m a little behind on the news of Facebook acquiring FriendFeed . My day today consisted of driving through up-state New York, and tonight I sit here typing just about a 15 minute walk from the beautiful Wonder of the World, Niagara Falls. There are so many better things to think about! (just see the pictures I took tonight) Yet, as I got the initial text via Tweet from Louis Gray today stating Facebook had acquired FriendFeed , I couldn’t get my mind off of what that would mean for both services.

The start of the personal computers faced a big challenge and obstacle, which is, what would people do with that computer? Computers needed what they call a killer app. An app that you would go and buy the whole computer for. Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program was once the killer app for the IBM’s PC in the 80s. Apple on the other hand, had to ask for Microsoft help back then to bring the killer office tool to it’s Apple computers. Otherwise, people won’t be tempted to buy a beautiful computer that lacks any useful software.

As the Internet space grows there are going to be some casualties for sure. As to who they are that remains to be seen because you just never know. This space is changing rapidly and what used to be the “latest and greatest’ can quickly turn into the lamest and not so greatest’. The latest ‘victim’ is Bloglines and Michael Arrington of TechCrunch tells it like it is The once-great feed reader, bought by IAC in February 2005 for around $10 million, has been on life support for a couple of years now.
