The day’s top political news: The White House strikes back On the defensive over the economy and health care, the White House is shooting back with a double-barreled message for its critics and skeptics. To Republicans who say the stimulus isn’t working: Back off. To moderate Democrats wary of health care reform: “We’re watching you.” Doing all it can to impose higher taxes, and promoting government takeover of healthcare, the struggle becomes more and more desperate as opposition to the Obama extremes become better and better organized.

Ed Whelan over at NRO’s Bench Memos points out — Judge Sotomayor says “eminent” when she means “imminent,” “providence” instead of “province,” “story of knowledge” instead of “store of knowledge,” and so on. Does the fact that she is a Latina immunize her from attention to that sort of (admittedly not uncommon) foible? Actually, Sotomayor’s protection from press scrutiny comes not because of her ethnicity but from her liberal politics.
