A few moments ago, the Democratic National Committee launched its most direct hit yet against the insurance industry, blasting out a release hammering the industry’s top trade group for engaging in an “astroturf” campaign to pump up turnout at town hall rallies. “As organic as James Traficant’s hair,” is how the DNC described efforts by the the trade group, Americas Health Care Plans, or AHIP. Well, AHIP has no intention whatsoever of backing off its efforts, an AHIP spokesperson just confirmed in an interview.

President Barack Obama’s daughters are mentioned in a controversial food ad put out by a Washington, D.C., public school campaign to Reform the Child Nutrition Act . The eight-year old African American girl in the ad is pictured along with the following quote: “President Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches, Why don’t I?” The controversy about the reference to Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, is whether the First Family’s children should be off-limits.

One piece of advice this weekend: Don’t go to see “Julie & Julia” hungry. Between the chocolaty pastries and the glistening roast duck and the butter slathered generously on everything, your stomach will be growling far before the credits roll on this hybrid biopic about a legendary television chef and the contemporary blogger who decided to cook every single one of her recipes. Apparently, life on the New York set of the film brought with it another set of culinary dangers.
