Any other questions? “Let’s keep in mind that Roman Polanski gave a 13-year-old girl a Quaalude and champagne, then raped her.” Just remember: If he weren’t a member of the politico-artistic elite, he’d have done hard time already.

Huffington Posts’ Jason Linkins does a great interview with Pulitzer-Prize-winning author and Columbia School of Journalism professor Dale Maharidge . I’m embarrassed to say I’d never heard of Maharidge before but he says a lot of smart things about journalism and covering economic issues that make me want to hear more from him. Roman Polankski is again the subject of discussion. What his story says is that if you can afford it, you can flee justice and wait out the authorities, just as, if you can afford it, you can hire a smart and expensive attorney to get you off from charges that most people wouldn’t have a chance against. Then there are the points made by Kate Harding at Salon : Roman Polanski raped a child.

This is how degenerate Hollywood’s become: Today it’s more damaging to your career to buck the “cool kids” and speak out against the child rapist than it is to be the child rapist. The round up below took twenty-minutes to put together. Who knows who or what else is out there. And don’t forget it’s early. Hollywood’s Rally ‘Round the Child-Sodomizer is only 36 hours old. Harvey Weinstein: “We’re calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation,” Weinstein said.

MEGAN MCARDLE ON ROMAN POLANSKI: “You would think we’d busted him for unpaid parking tickets. The guy drugged a thirteen year old girl in order to rape her. Perhaps the French have some sophisticated, European point of view on these things that I, with my puritan ancestry, simply cannot rise to.”Or they could just be miserable shitheels. My journal, La Règle du jeu , is working in support of Roman Polanski and mobilizing writers and artists through the following petition: Apprehended like a common terrorist Saturday evening, September 26, as he came to receive a prize for his entire body of work, Roman Polanski now sleeps in prison. He risks extradition to the United States for an episode that happened years ago and whose principal plaintiff repeatedly and emphatically declares she has put it behind her and abandoned any wish for legal proceedings.
