Oakland’s new police chief, Anthony Batts, is a 30-year veteran of the Long Beach Police Department who is well regarded by rank-and-file officers and gained a reputation as chief for his support of community policing. In naming Batts to Oakland’s top law enforcement position on Wednesday, Mayor Ron Dellums said that under Batts’ leadership, the crime rate in Long Beach dropped to its lowest point since 1975. Long Beach Vice Mayor Val Lerch said Batts restructured the department and deployed officers in a way that dramatically lowered crime.

Apple’s board of directors will meet next Tuesday to discuss a replacement for Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt, the WSJ reports . Schmidt resigned from the board earlier this month as conflicts of interest between the two companies have increased. Apple’s board of directors will meet next Tuesday to discuss a replacement for Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt, the WSJ reports . Schmidt resigned from the board earlier this month as conflicts of interest between the two companies have increased. One potential replacement is Apple COO Tim Cook , who led the company while Jobs was on medical leave. A source — widely believed to be Steve Jobs — told the WSJ in June that Cook may be appointed to the board soon.

This rumor has been spawned by music industry insiders, which is an interesting twist especially given that Apple and the major labels are said to be working on competing digital album formats for Fall delivery. What exactly is going on here? AllThingsD is reporting comments by unnamed music industry wonks that say Apple’s planning a media event for the week of September 7. Of course, that date falls on a Monday and the company generally runs its analyst and reporter new product dog and pony shows early in the week.

We’re hearing “multiple sources” are now reporting that Apple is most likely planning a keynote event — possibly for the week of September 7th. There’s also the requisite murmuring that one Steve Jobs may make an appearance — though of course, there’s also nothing more solid than wishes and fairy dust to back that one [...]

As far as possible product launches go, well, there have been significant whisperings about upcoming iPod / iTunes developments as of late, including the company’s reported dealings with major record labels .
