What a total surprise (kidding!). In a statement, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that “as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest.” That Chrome OS was the last straw, I’d warrant.

What happens when a warm front and cold front collide? Usually, extremely violent weather, which could include, torrential rain, lightning and thunder, hail, and tornadoes. Steve Jobs is back at the helm. In addition to getting down and dirty on the product stuff we are now seeing him take care of some looming issues around people . Overdue or not, Eric Schmidt’s resignation from the Apple board today is certainly the right move. It’s understandable that neither side wanted to look like they had been forced into this by news of a Department of Justice investigation, so it’s fitting that they used the cover of Google’s announcement of the Chrome OS – a piece of vapourware that is at least a year away – to make the necessary split. There are still some loose ends, however.

What happens when the enemy of your enemy is no longer your friend? You cast him out, as Steve Jobs seems to have done to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who today resigned his seat from Apple’s board . An alliance which began with a mutual distrust of Microsoft is now under strain because of a mutual distrust of each other. Google is not so much the enemy of Microsoft as it is the enemy of the old model of device-centric computing which both Microsoft and Apple represent.

A popular topic of discussion lately in every corner of the Web has been Eric Schmidt’s position on Apple’s Board of Directors and the many possible conflicts it now presents. While opinions have varied, most take the stance that Google’s business has begun to overlap with Apple’s in too many key areas and as such, Schmidt’s role with the company is no longer appropriate. Well, the debate is over. Apparently, Google’s CEO and the Cupertino crew finally came to their senses.
