According to BusinessWeek , Apple Computer –a company with plenty of critics in the environmental movement–is working to change the debate about carbon emissions. Company executives say that most existing green rankings are flawed in several respects. They count the promises companies make about green plans rather than actual achievements. And most focus on the environmental impact of a company’s operations, but exclude that of its products.

In the latest example of Apple going green, the technology company has launched a revised and expanded web site, Apple and the Environment . While the company, to date, has largely focused on reporting the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes, the updated site also examines Apple products over their entire life cycle, including consumer usage. In conjunction with the site launch, Peter Burrows of BusinessWeek reports on Apple’s effort to change the “terms of debate” over the environment.

Faced with mounting pressure from green activists, Apple has decided to launch a new and more aggressive green campaign to improve the company’s image among the more eco-friendly community. The initiative aims to poke holes in existing models for green reporting by companies as well as revamp Apple’s policies in regards to harmful materials used in the production of their products. “A lot of companies publish how green their building is, but it doesn’t matter if you’re shipping millions of power-hungry products with toxic chemicals in them,” says CEO Steve Jobs in an interview.
